Abstract This study aims to analyze the length-weight relationship (LWR) of 22 fish species collected in the surf zone of Ponta de Pedras, northern coast of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. The specimens were collected between August 2013 and July 2014 using a beach seine net, and their biometry were recorded in laboratory. The LWR was calculated using linear regression and, confidence intervals were estimated for the regression parameters a and b. A total of 1,433 specimens belonging to 22 species, 12 families, and six orders were collected. All species had b values within the expected range of 2.5-3.5 (except for S. plagusia). Additionally, 11 species have hyperallometry, eight have isometry, and three have hypoallometry. Herein, we present values of LWR for Lycengraulis grossidens, Trachinotus goodei, and Umbrina coroides, which are new to Northeastern Brazil, and Albula vulpes and Sparisoma radius which are new for the Brazilian coast.

Abstract Catches of pelagic fish associated to anchored Fish Aggregating Devices have been responsible for increases in income, fish consumption, and even cultural identity of artisanal fishing communities in many developing countries worldwide. Nonetheless, in Brazil, aFAD fishing is still poorly developed and studied. In this experiment, FADs were anchored offshore the city of Recife (Northeastern Brazil) to investigate the potential of moored buoys in the aggregation of commercially important pelagic species near the coast, as an alternative fishing site for artisanal fishers. The behavior of acoustically tagged fish was investigated to assess whether they were attracted to the FADs and how long they remained associated to them. The results indicated that, although economically important species were found near the FADs, they did not remain associated for long periods. From the four species tagged, Acanthocybium solandri, Coryphaena hippurus, Thunnus atlanticus, and Caranx crysos, only the two latter were detected at the FADs. Both species presented a preference for a specific FAD, with stronger site fidelity being recorded for C. crysos. This species presented Total Resident Times (TRTs) of more than a month and continuous residence times of more than 14 consecutive days. T. atlanticus, on the other hand, remained around the buoys for short time intervals, with a maximum TRT of only two days. Short diurnal excursions far from the FADs and few longer excursions during nighttime were recorded for C. crysos. These results do not support the possible use of moored FADs near the coast of Recife as an alternative fishing site for artisanal fisheries. It is possible that the geomorphological characteristics of the experimental area did not favor the aggregative behavior of large pelagic fish species, such as tunas, around FADs.

RESUMO: O tubarão-lixa, Ginglymostoma cirratum (Bonnaterre, 1778) é uma das espécies mais estudadas de elasmobrânquios. O conhecimento de sua biologia reprodutiva, no entanto, ainda é relativamente raro, particularmente no Oeste do Atlântico Sul. Este estudo objetivou a descrição morfológica do útero e ovário de G. cirratum, baseado em espécimes capturados na costa de Fortaleza/CE, no Nordeste do Brasil. Um total de dez fêmeas foi coletado de setembro de 2012 a junho de 2013, nos desembarques regulares da pesca artesanal, que comercializam essa espécie livremente. A metodologia foi de acordo com as analises macroscópica e histológica dos ovários e útero. G. cirratum tem o tipo de morfologia de ovário interno, com invaginações de tecido conjuntivo, que define compartimentos e separa grupos de oócitos em lotes ovígeros. O epitélio que reveste o ovário varia de epitélio simples colunar ciliado na área que não apresenta lotes ovígeros para epitélio simples cúbico na porção de revestimento do órgão epigonal, onde o tecido ovariano é ausente. A mucosa uterina possui células secretoras, evidenciadas pela coloração em Alcian Blue, indicando a produção de mucopolissacarídeos, mesmo em indivíduos imaturos. Este tubarão lecitotrófico apresenta a mucosa uterina vascularizada, sendo esta uma característica de espécies de elasmobrânquios vivíparos.

ABSTRACT: The nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum (Bonnaterre, 1778) is one of the most studied species of elasmobranchs. However, the knowledge of their reproductive biology is still relatively rare, particularly in the western South Atlantic. This study aimed to describe the morphology of the uterus and the ovary of G. cirratum, based on specimens caught off at the Fortaleza/CE coast, northeast Brazil. Samples were collected from September 2012 to June 2013, from regular landings of artisanal fishing, which commercialize this species freely. A total of ten females were collected. The methodologies followed for analyzing the ovaries and uterus of those females included both macroscopic and histological analysis. G. cirratum has internal type ovary morphology, with invaginations of connective tissue, which defines compartments and separate oocyte groups in ovigerous lots. The epithelium lining the ovary changes from simple columnar ciliated in the area without ovigerous lots, which turns into a simple cubic epithelium in the coating portion of the epigonal organ where ovarian tissue is absent. The uterine mucosa has secretory cells denoted by Alcian Blue staining, indicating the production of mucopolysaccharides, even in immature individuals. This lecithotrophic shark has a uterine vascularized mucosa that is one characteristic of viviparous elasmobranch species.

A smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena) was found in Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago in May 2015. This is the first confirmed occurrence of a smooth hammerhead shark in an equatorial oceanic island and suggests a geographic range extension for the species.

RESUMO Um melhor entendimento sobre a utilização de hábitat das espécies de tubarões costeiros, e como ela se sobrepõe à presença humana em regiões altamente populosas, se faz necessário a fim de subsidiar o desenvolvimento de eficientes medidas de conservação para esses importantes predadores de topo. Um estudo intensivo utilizando espinhel, conduzido em águas costeiras do nordeste do Brasil entre os anos de 2004 e 2014, capturou um total de 18 tubarões cabeça-chata (Carcharhinus leucas) (proporção macho-fêmea = 0,63:1), os quais podem ser perigosos para humanos. Apesar da maioria dos tubarões estarem sexualmente maduros, não houve evidências de que essa região esteja sendo utilizada como uma área de parto ou berçário. Entre os itens alimentares identificados foram encontrados teleósteos, moluscos e elasmobrânquios. Além disso, um tubarão cabeça-chata marcado com um transmissor satélite percorreu uma grande distância (> 3.000 km) em 75 dias em liberdade, fazendo o uso de águas superficiais (< 20 m profundidade) e presumivelmente entrando em uma área estuarina. Apesar de os tubarões cabeça-chata não corresponderem a um recurso pesqueiro importante nessa região, tal reduzida abundância juntamente com a sua afinidade por hábitats costeiros reforçam a potencial vulnerabilidade de C. leucas às interferências antrópicas deletérias ao longo da costa nordeste do Brasil.

ABSTRACT A robust understanding of habitat usage by coastal shark species, and how it overlaps with human presence in densely-populated regions is needed to inform the development of efficient conservation strategies for these important top predators. An intensive longline survey conducted in nearshore waters off northeastern Brazil from 2004 through 2014 caught a total of 18 bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) (male-female ratio = 0.63:1), which can be dangerous to humans. Although most sharks were sexually mature, there was no evidence that this region could be used as a parturition or nursery area. Prey items identified in the guts of the sharks comprised teleosts, mollusks and elasmobranchs. Additionally, one satellite-tagged bull shark covered a great distance (> 3,000 km) in 75 days at liberty, making most use of shallow waters (< 20 m depth) and presumably also entering an estuarine area. Although bull sharks are not an important fishery resource in this region, such a reduced abundance coupled with its affinity for coastal and inshore habitats highlights the potential vulnerability of C. leucas to deleterious anthropic interferences off northeastern Brazil.

The southern stingray, Dasyatis americana, one of the most common species of rays of the family Dasyatidae, is distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean. In Brazil, it occurs especially in the northeast coast, being usually sighted in Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and in the Rocas Atoll. The present research sought to elucidate the pattern of vertical movements of the D. americana inside the Rocas Atoll and in its surroundings, through the use of satellite electronic transmitters PSAT (Pop-up Satellite Archival Tags), as well as to understand the role of Rocas Atoll in the conservation of this species. The vertical distribution of depth and temperature were obtained from two adult female stingrays, identified as Ray I and Ray II, measuring approximately 95 and 108 cm disc wide respectively. The results indicated a strong preference for both specimens for the shallow and warm waters of the Rocas Atoll. Ray I and Ray II remained 91.4% and 86.3% of the monitoring period, respectively, in warm waters, at temperatures >28°C and up to 5 m in depth. The results show that areas with shallow waters constitute one of the essential habitats for the species in Rocas Atoll, with a likely occurrence of site fidelity.

La raya-látigo americana Dasyatis americana, una de las especies más comunes de la familia Dasyatidae, se distribuye en aguas tropicales y subtropicales del Océano Atlántico occidental. En Brasil, ocurre sobre todo en la costa noreste, siendo comúnmente avistada en Fernando de Noronha y en el Atolón Las Rocas. En la presente investigación se analizó el patrón de desplazamiento vertical de la D. americana al interior del Atolón Las Rocas y en sus alrededores, mediante satélites transmisores electrónicos PSAT (Pop-up Satellite Archival Tags), así como la comprensión del rol de este atolón en la conservación de esta especie. La distribución en profundidad y temperatura vertical se obtuvieron de dos hembras adultas de rayas, identificadas como Raya I y Raya II, que medían aproximadamente 95 y 108 cm de ancho de disco, respectivamente. Los resultados indicaron una fuerte preferencia de los dos especímenes por aguas poco profundas y cálidas del Atolón Las Rocas. Raya I y Raya II permanecieron 91,4% y 86,3% del período de seguimiento, respectivamente, en aguas cálidas con temperaturas >28°C y hasta 5 m de profundidad. Los resultados muestran que las zonas de aguas someras constituyen uno de los hábitats esenciales para esta especie en el Atolón Las Rocas, e indican una probable fidelidad con este lugar.

Several studies conducted in Brazilian oceanic islands have generated many results of great significance for the understanding of these ecosystems. However, most of these studies have been restricted to shallow waters, not going beyond 200 m depth. In this work, seven exploratory deep-water fishing surveys were carried out with bottom traps at Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago, between 2012 and 2014, at depths ranging from 300 to 700 m. During these surveys the presence of a deep-sea crab, identified as Chaceon gordonae was recorded, with 458 specimens being caught. Of the sampled specimens, 252 were males and 206 were females. The carapace length (CL) of sampled crabs measured, on the average, 110.81 ± 14.52 mm for males and 102.00 ± 16.55 mm for females. In general, the β1 parameter of the length-weight relationship indicates a positive allometric growth. A comparison of linear regression between the carapace length and right chela length and width for males suggested a morphological maturity of 108.90 and 110.10 mm CL, respectively, whereas the regression between carapace length and abdomen width in females indicated a size at morphological maturity of 84.00 mm CL.

Varios estudios realizados en las islas oceánicas brasileñas han generado resultados de gran importancia para la comprensión de estos ecosistemas. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estos estudios se han limitado a aguas poco profundas, no más allá de 200 m de profundidad. Se analizan siete campañas experimentales de pesca en aguas profundas efectuadas con trampas de fondo en el Archipiélago de San Pedro y San Pablo, a profundidades de 300 a 700 m, entre 2012 y 2014. Durante estos estudios, se registró la presencia de 458 especímenes del cangrejo de profundidad Chaceon gordonae. De los ejemplares analizados, 252 fueron machos y 206 hembras. La longitud de caparazón (CL) midió en promedio 110,81 ± 14,52 mm en los machos y 102,00 ± 16,55 mm en las hembras. En general, el parámetro β1 de la relación longitud-peso mostró un crecimiento alométrico positivo. La comparación de la regresión lineal entre la longitud de caparazón y la longitud y ancho de la chela derecha en los machos indicó una madurez morfológica a 108,90 y 110,10 mm LC, respectivamente, mientras que la regresión entre la longitud y ancho del caparazón del abdomen de las hembras indicó una talla de madurez morfológica a los 84,00 mm CL.

Quatro exemplares de agulhão-vela foram marcados com marcas eletrônicas monitoradas por satélite ('Pop-up satellite archival tags - PSATs') nas águas costeiras do Rio de Janeiro, sudeste do Brasil, durante janeiro e fevereiro de 2009 (agulhão-vela I e II) e entre novembro de 2010 e janeiro de 2011 (agulhão-vela III e IV). O número total de dias monitorados (ou seja, o tempo que as marcas permaneceram implantadas nos peixes) foram 12 (agulhão-vela I), 51 (agulhão-vela II), 16 (agulhão-vela III) e 43 dias (agulhão-vela IV). Os resultados demonstram um padrão claro de utilização do hábitat com a maior parte do tempo despendido predominantemente próximo à superfície do mar ocupando águas com uma faixa de temperatura restrita. Apesar da preferência por águas superficiais, os agulhões frequentemente realizaram mergulhos para águas mais profundas (ca. > 50 m) em intervalos de três a seis horas. A "rota mais provável" estimada a partir dos dados brutos de geolocalização e o modelo 'State-Space Kalman Filter' sugerem que os agulhões marcados não realizaram migrações significativas a partir do local de marcação. Em resumo, nossos resultados apresentam informações sobre a biologia da espécie no Atlântico Sudoeste e como as migrações verticais durante o dia e a noite são influenciadas pela temperatura da água e como essa informação pode auxiliar as avaliações de estoques de agulhão-vela no sudoeste do Atlântico.

Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on four sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, in the coastal waters of Rio de Janeiro State in southeast Brazil during January and February of 2009 (sailfish I and II) and between November 2010 and January 2011 (sailfish III and IV). The total number of days monitored (i.e., time that the tags remained attached) were 12 (sailfish I), 51 (sailfish II), 16 (sailfish III) and 43 days (sailfish IV). The results indicate a clear pattern of vertical habitat utilization with the majority of the time spent concentrated near the uniform sea surface layer occupying a relatively narrow temperature range. Despite the clear preference for epipelagic surface waters, sailfish regularly undertook vertical excursions into deeper waters (>50 m) within three to six hour intervals. "Most Probable Tracks" (estimated from raw geolocations using the state-space Kalman filter model) and linear displacements suggested that tagged sailfish did not move significant distances from the tagging site. In brief, our report provides information regarding the biology of sailfish in the southwestern Atlantic and how vertical distributions during the day and night are influenced by water temperature and how this information can improve sailfish stock assessments in southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

A elevada taxa de ataques de tubarão verificada em Recife poderá estar relacionada com o comportamento migratório do tubarão tigre. O início desta situação coincidiu com a construção do porto de Suape localizado a Sul de Recife. Um estudo anterior sugeriu que algumas das espécies responsáveis pelos ataques poderiam estar seguindo as correntes costeiras para Norte e que o trânsito marítimo estaria atraindo as mesmas para junto da costa. Neste cenário, a movimentação dos tubarões para Norte implicaria uma maior probabilidade de estes acessarem o litoral de Recife após sairem de Suape. Para averiguar os padrões de movimentação do tubarão tigre no nordeste brasileiro, foram aplicados transmissores via satélite a 5 espécimes capturados ao largo de Recife. Todas as marcas transmitiram de latitudes a Norte após 7-74 dias em liberdade. A menor distância entre os locais de captura e de primeira transmissão foi de 33-209 km, correspondendo a velocidades médias mínimas entre 0.02-0.98 km.h−1. As localizações da primeira transmissão e os dados de profundidade sugerem que os movimentos dos animais foram realizados principalmente sobre a plataforma continental. Os tubarões menores deslocaram-se para águas profundas em até 24 horas após a liberação, mas assumiram uma distribuição mais superficial (< 50 m) durante a maior parte do tempo. Este estudo apresenta os primeiros resultados das movimentações de tubarões tigre no Atlântico Sul e adiciona novas informações para a compreensão dos motivos que levaram à problemática de ataques de tubarão verificada nesta região.

An abnormally high shark attack rate verified off Recife could be related to migratory behavior of tiger sharks. This situation started after the construction of the Suape port to the south of Recife. A previous study suggested that attacking sharks could be following northward currents and that they were being attracted shoreward by approaching vessels. In this scenario, such northward movement pattern could imply a higher probability of sharks accessing the littoral area of Recife after leaving Suape. Pop-up satellite archival tags were deployed on five tiger sharks caught off Recife to assess their movement patterns off northeastern Brazil. All tags transmitted from northward latitudes after 7-74 days of freedom. The shorter, soak distance between deployment and pop-up locations ranged between 33-209 km and implied minimum average speeds of 0.02-0.98 km.h−1. Both pop-up locations and depth data suggest that tiger shark movements were conducted mostly over the continental shelf. The smaller sharks moved to deeper waters within 24 hours after releasing, but they assumed a shallower (< 50 m) vertical distribution for most of the monitoring period. While presenting the first data on tiger shark movements in the South Atlantic, this study also adds new information for the reasoning of the high shark attack rate verified in this region.

A pesar de la importancia de las capturas del atún de aleta negra Thunnus atlanticus en el noreste de Brasil y en las cercanías del Archipiélago San Pedro y San Pablo (ASPSP), hay una escasez de información sobre su reproducción, especialmente en las islas. La reproducción del atún de aleta negra en este archipiélago se estudió de diciembre 2008 a julio 2010. Con este fin, se recolectaron 361 gónadas de hembras y machos, los machos fueron predominantemente más frecuentes en la muestra total, con una proporción sexual de 1♀:2.2 ♂. La longitud furcal todos los ejemplares muestreados varió entre 38 y 98 cm, y los machos fueron más abundantes en las clases de mayor longitud. Los valores medios mensuales del índice gonadal (IG) variaron de 6.6 (SD=4.1) a 58.4 (SD=34.7) y de 2.6 (SD=1.3) a 66.2 (SD=30.4) para hembras y machos, respectivamente. Los mayores valores de IG para ambos sexos fueron observados el inicio del primer semestre. Los análisis histológicos mostraron que la mayoría de los ovarios y testículos correspondieron a especímenes aptos para reproducirse. Sin embargo, hembras con ovarios maduros, con gran cantidad de oócitos hidratados y folículos post ovulatorios, se encontraron principalmente de diciembre a marzo, que se considera es la época de reproducción del atún de aleta negra alrededor del ASPSP.

The reproduction of Blackfin tuna Thunnus atlanticus has been described for coastal regions, and for a long time, this species was considered to be a strictly continental spawner. Recently, this species was observed around a seamount habitat 500 nautical miles Northeast of Brazil, located between South America and Africa. In this study we describe the reproductive biology of Blackfin tuna at Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago (SPSPA). Male and female gonads were sampled from December 2008 to July 2010, and analyzed macro and microscopically. A total of 361 fish were sampled (247 males and 114 females). Males were more common than females, with a sex ratio of 2.2 ♂:1♀. The fork length (FL) of all sampled specimens ranged from 38 to 98cm, and larger length classes were more frequent in males. It was possible to distinguish six maturity phases for females: immature, developing, spawning capable, actively spawning, regressing and recovering. Five phases were identified for males: immature, developing, spawning capable, actively spawning and recovering. The gonad index (GI) mean monthly values ranged from 6.6 (SD=4.1) to 58.4 (SD=34.7) for females, and from 2.6 (SD=1.3) to 66.2 (SD=30.4) for males. For both sexes, the largest GI values were observed at the beginning of the first semester of the year. Size at first maturity was estimated at 48cm FL and 55cm FL for females and males respectively. Approximately 80% of the specimens were adults and considered to be in reproductive conditions. Histological analysis of the ovaries and testes showed that most of the specimens were sexually mature and were reproductively active during all months of the year. However, females with mature ovaries, with large amounts of hydrated oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles, were mainly found from December to March, thus these months may constitute the main spawning season in SPSPA. Batch fecundity varied between 272 025 and 1 140 584 oocytes for 56 and 68cm FL females respectively. Oocyte development and spawning patterns suggest a multiple spawning behavior. The results revealed that Blackfin tuna is using the SPSPA as a spawning ground, similar to other species commonly observed in the same area during the same reproductive season.

A oogênese é um estágio chave no desenvolvimento reprodutivo de um organismo, o qual pode ser melhor compreendido a partir de análises histológicas dos ovários em diferentes estágios de maturidade. A fim de fornecer informações sobre a biologia reprodutiva do cangulo-preto, M. niger, em especial sobre o seu processo de oogênese, este estudo teve como objetivo identificar e caracterizar as fases do desenvolvimento ovocitário e sua organização dentro dos diferentes estágios de maturação ovariana, baseado em espécimes do Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo. No presente estudo, um número de 294 ovários foram analisados histologicamente. Foi verificado que eles são constituídos por lamelas ovígeras contendo ovócitos em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento. Foram identificados cinco diferentes estágios da oogênese: células jovens, com tamanho médio de 12,9 ìm; ovócitos pré-vitelogênicos (perinucleolares), com tamanho médio de 53,5 ìm; ovócitos alvéolo-corticais, com tamanho médio de 83,1 ìm; ovócitos vitelogênicos, com tamanho médio de 160,4 ìm e ovócitos maduros, com tamanho médio de 289,8 ìm. Além das células germinativas, algumas estruturas somáticas também foram identificadas, tais como: parede do ovário, células foliculares e vasos sanguíneos. Baseado no tipo e número de ovócitos observados, quatro estágios de maturação ovariana foram identificados: início de maturação, representado por apenas 2,2% da amostra; média maturação, representado por 9,9%; madura, representado por 44,2% e em repouso representado por 43,9%. A identificação de cinco estágios do desenvolvimento ovocitário nos ovários de M. niger, sugere que a espécie segue um padrão semelhante ao descrito para outros peixes marinhos.

The oogenesis is a key stage in the reproductive development of an organism, which can be best understood from histological analysis of ovaries in different maturity stages. In order to provide information on the reproductive biology of the black triggerfish, M. niger, in particular on its oogenesis process, this study aimed at identifying and characterizing the oocyte development stages and its organization within the different stages of ovarian maturation based on specimens from São Pedro e São Paulo Archipelago. In this present report, a number of 294 ovaries were histologically analyzed. It was verified that they are composed of ovigerous lamellae containing oocytes at different development stages. Five different stages of oogenesis were identified: young cells, with an average size of 12.9 ìm; previtellogenic oocytes (perinucleolar), with an average size of 53.5 ìm; cortical-alveoli oocytes with an average size of 83.1 ìm; vitellogenic oocytes, with an average size of 160.4 ìm and mature oocytes, with an average size of 289.8 ìm. In addition to the germ cells, some somatic structures were also identified, such as: ovarian wall, follicular cells and blood vessels. Based on the type and number of oocytes observed, four stages of ovarian maturation were identified: early maturation, represented by only 2.2% of the sample; middle maturation, represented by 9.9%; mature, represented by 44.2% and resting, represented by 43.9%. The identification of five oocyte development stages in the ovarians from M. niger, suggested that the specie follows a pattern similar to that described for other marine fish.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a biologia reprodutiva do tubarão galha-branca, Carcharhinus longimanus, para assim ampliar as informações sobre a espécie. A área de estudo compreendeu o Atlântico Sudoeste e Equatorial e foram utilizados 234 espécimes coletados entre dezembro de 2003 e dezembro de 2010. Estes foram obtidos por redes de pesca comercial de atum e peixe-espada e vários tubarões, incluindo o tubarão galha-branca, são capturados nesta pescaria de forma acidental. Esses espinhéis operam no Atlântico Sudoeste e Equatorial entre as latitudes 10N e 35S, e longitudes 3E e 40W. Entre os 234 indivíduos capturados, 118 foram fêmeas (81 a 227cm de comprimento total, CT) e 116 foram machos (80 a 242 cm CT). Os estados de maturação das fêmeas foram categorizados como: imaturas, maduras, pré-ovulatórias e grávidas. Os machos foram divididos em: imaturos, em maturação e maduros. O tamanho da primeira maturação para as fêmeas foi estimado em 170 cm de CT, enquanto que o tamanho de maturação sexual dos machos variou entre 170 e 190 cm de CT. A fecundidade ovariana oscilou entre um e 10 folículos, enquanto que a fecundidade do útero oscilou entre um e 10 embriões. Os dados indicam que o ciclo reprodutivo é provavelmente bianual, com o nascimento ocorrendo uma vez a cada dois anos.

The present study sought to study the reproductive biology of the oceanic whitetip shark, Carcharhinus longimanus, in the equatorial and southwestern Atlantic Ocean. A total of 234 specimens were collected as bycatch during pelagic longline fisheries targeting tunas and swordfish, between December 2003 and December 2010. The fishing area was located between latitudes 10N and 35S and longitudes 3E and 40W. Of the 234 individuals sampled, 118 were females (with sizes ranging from 81 to 227 cm TL, total length) and 116 males (ranging from 80 to 242 cm TL). The reproductive stages of the females were classed as immature, mature, preovulatory and pregnant, while males were divided into immature, maturing and mature. The size at maturity for females was estimated at 170.0 cm TL, while that for males was between 170.0 and 190.0 cm TL. Ovarian fecundity ranged from 1 to 10 follicles and uterine fecundity from 1 to 10 embryos. The reproductive cycle of this species is most likely biennial, with parturition occurring once every two years.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o trato reprodutivo feminino de tubarões lombo preto, Carcharhinus falciformis, capturados no Atlântico Sul e Equatorial. As amostras foram coletadas entre janeiro de 2008 e março de 2010, através das embarcações da frota atuneira, que tem como pesca alvo o atum e espadarte, com um total de 17 fêmeas coletadas. A metodologia seguida para analisar os ovários das fêmeas incluiu a análise macroscópica e histológica. Macroscopicamente, foi possível determinar que o ovário destes tubarões, é suspenso por mesentério na seção anterior da cavidade do corpo, muito irrigada por vasos sanguíneos, contendo uma vasta gama de ovócitos. Os ovários foram encontrados em três diferentes estágios de maturação: estádio I (imaturo), estágio II (maturação) e fase III (Maturo). Ovários imaturos foram pequenos, com largura variando de 1,0 a 3,1 centímetros, e tinham uma estrutura gelatinosa ou granulosa interna; ovários em maturação foram ligeiramente maiores, variando de largura entre 5,2 e 6,0 cm; ovários maduros variaram de largura entre 6,5 e 7,8 cm, possuíam uma forma mais arredondada e a presença de ovócitos grandes e bem desenvolvidos. Ao exame microscópico, foi possível observar que os ovários foram cobertos com tecido epitelial simples durante os estágios iniciais de desenvolvimento, e um epitélio cúbico simples na fase final de maturação. Durante os estágios iniciais de maturação, o órgão epigonal não foi diferenciado do ovário. Em espécimes maduros, o ovário mostrou um epitélio cúbico simples, e só abaixo deste epitélio havia uma camada de tecido conjuntivo denso e músculo com a presença de ovócitos vitelogênicos e células de gordura. Também foi evidenciada uma membrana fina juntando os ovócitos. Finalmente, foi possível distinguir uma zona pelúcida, separando os ovócitos da parede do folículo e uma lâmina basal entre as camadas granular e da camada teca.

This work aims to study the female reproductive tract of silky sharks, Carcharhinus falciformis, captured in the South and Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Samples were collected between January 2008 and March 2010 through oceanic commercial vessels that targeted tuna and swordfish, with a total of 17 females collected. The methodologies followed for analyzing the ovaries of those females included both macroscopic and histological analysis. Macroscopically, it was possible to determine that the ovaries on these sharks is suspended by mesenteries in the anterior section of the body cavity, heavily irrigated by blood vessels, and contains a wide range of oocytes. Ovaries were found in three distinct maturational stages: Stage I (Immature), Stage II (Maturing) and Stage III (Mature). Immature ovaries were small, with widths ranging from 1.0 to 3.1 cm, and had a gelatinous or granulose internal structure; maturing ovaries were slightly larger, ranging in width between 5.2 and 6.0 cm; mature ovaries ranged in width between 6.5 and 7.8 cm, and had a more rounded shape and the presence of large and well developed oocytes. Under microscopic examination, it was observed that the ovaries were covered with simple epithelial tissue during the early development stages and a simple cubic epithelium in the final stages of maturation. During the initial maturation stages the epigonal organ was not differentiated from the ovary. In mature specimens, the ovary showed a simple cubic epithelium and just below this epithelium there was a layer of dense connective tissue and muscle with the presence of vitellogenic oocytes and fat cells. A thin yolk membrane enclosing the oocytes was also evident. Finally, it was possible to distinguish a zona pellucida, separating the oocytes from the follicle wall and a basal lamina between the granular layers and the teak layer.

Os aspectos reprodutivos da baúna-de-fogo Lutjanus alexandrei foram caracterizados, incluindo a descrição do desenvolvimento dos ovócitos e células espermatogênicas, do tamanho de primeira maturação sexual, e da fecundidade. Um total de 540 peixes foi analisado, dos quais 250 tiveram as suas gônadas seccionadas para avaliação microscópica. Seis estágios de maturidade sexual foram determinados para fêmeas e machos: imaturo, em maturação, maduro, desovando, desovado e repouso. O comprimento padrão (CP) dos peixes variou de 13,0 a 28,3 cm e a proporção sexual foi de 1,6 machos: 1,0 fêmeas. As distribuições mensais dos valores médios do Índice Gonadosomático (IGS) e dos estágios de maturidade sexual sugerem a ocorrência de desovas em um período prolongado, principalmente nos meses de temperaturas mais quentes, entre novembro e março. O tamanho médio de primeira maturação sexual foi estimado em 17,1 cm CP para as fêmeas e 16,9 cm CP para os machos. O padrão de desenvolvimento dos ovócitos sugere que L. alexandrei exibe comportamento de múltiplas desovas por lote, e a fecundidade variou entre 34.000 a 324.000 ovócitos.

Reproductive aspects of the Brazilian snapper Lutjanus alexandrei, were characterized, including a description of the development of oocytes and spermatogenic cells, size at first sexual maturity, and fecundity. A total of 540 fish were analyzed with 250 having their gonads sectioned to allow microscopic evaluation. Six maturity stages were identified for females and males: immature, maturing, mature, spawning, spawned, and resting. Fish standard length (SL) varied from 13.0 to 28.3 cm and sex ratio was 1.6 males: 1.0 females. Monthly distributions of mean Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and maturity stages suggest that spawning occurs mainly in a protracted period, during the warmer months, from November to March. The size of first sexual maturity was estimated at 17.1 cm SL for females and 16.8 cm SL for males. Oocyte development suggests that L. alexandrei exhibits a multiple batch spawning behavior and batch fecundity varied from 34,000 to 324,000 oocytes.

Um total de 291 estômagos de albacoras-bandolins capturadas no oceano Atlântico tropical oeste variando entre 60 e 195 cm de comprimento furcal, foram analisados entre outubro de 2004 e dezembro de 2005. A distribuição vertical das presas foi estudada em relação às estratégias alimentares. Um total de 83 itens alimentares foi identificado dos quais 46 foram peixes representados principalmente por peixes brefoepipelágicos e mesopelágicos, 20 cefalópodes, 13 crustáceos pelágicos, um tunicado, um heterópode e um pterópode. A palombeta-do-Caribe, Brama caribbea, foi o item alimentar mais importante, seguida de outros peixes mesopelágicos como Alepisaurus ferox, Omosudis lowei, Gempylus serpens, Brama brama e Diretmus argenteus. A lula Ornithoteuthis antillarum foi o principal cefalópode predado, e os crustáceos Caridea e megalopas de Brachyura também foram itens importantes. A alimentação deve ocorrer de forma contínua, toda hora, ou pelo menos durante a maior parte do dia ou da noite, como parte da estratégia de predar sobre presas espalhadas na coluna d'água. A relativa equitabilidade de proporções de organismos de superfície, meia-água e água profunda na dieta refletem um comportamento de constante deslocamento vertical a procura de presas. Embora a albacora-bandolim prefira camadas subtermoclinais, a maioria de suas presas realiza migrações verticais diárias e podem então, serem predadas tanto próximas à superfície como em águas mais profundas.

A total of 291 stomachs of bigeye tuna caught in the Western tropical Atlantic Ocean ranging between 60 and 195 cm fork length, were analyzed between October 2004 and November 2005. The vertical distribution of prey was studied in relation to their feeding strategies. A total of 83 prey items were identified of which 46 were fishes, represented mainly by brephoepipelagic, and meso-bathypelagic fishes; 20 cephalopods, 13 pelagic crustaceans, one tunicate, one heteropod and one pteropod. The Caribbean pomfret Brama caribbea was the most important food item, followed by other mesopelagic fishes such as Alepisaurus ferox, Omosudis lowei, Gempylus serpens, Brama brama and Diretmus argenteus. The squid Ornithoteuthis antillarum was the main preyed-on cephalopod, and the crustaceans Caridea and Brachyuran megalopae were also important food items. The feeding may occur continuously, all the time, or at least during the greater part of the day or night, as part of the feeding strategy to prey upon a vertically scattered small prey distributed in the water column. The relative equality in the proportions of surface, mid-water and deep-water prey organisms reflects the behavior of constant vertical displacement in the search for prey. Although the bigeye tuna prefers subthermocline layers, most of its prey items perform diel migrations and can be preyed on both near the surface and in deeper waters.
